    Proper methods to cooking with stainless steel cookware

    The transition from non-stick cookware to stainless steel cookware can be a tricky one, especially as most people have only ever grown up with non-stick cookware! That said the benefits of stainless steel cookware definitely make it worthwhile for this transition. 

    The stickiness that many have experienced with stainless steel cookware is really something of the past because technology today is different - it's much better. Today's stainless steel products actually enhance your cooking and eating experience. 

    However, you can't expect to cook in the same way with stainless steel as you do with non-stick cookware.

    A "physical non-stick" effect can be achieved while cooking with stainless steel cookware, by following these simple steps:

    • Heat the pan and oil together
    • Use 80% of the maximum heat level on your stove top.
    • Pay attention to the oil - once you see signs of a heat wave, turn the heat down to medium heat.
    • At medium heat temperature - this is the most ideal temperature to cook with stainless steel cookware
    • Once you are this setting you can start putting your ingredients in without the food sticking to the surface - it's that simple!

    Proper techniques to cook rice in stainless steel rice cookers that won't stick

    At first, cooking rice with a stainless steel cooker may appear tricky and beginners may find the rice sticking to the pot. Follower these proper usage guidelines and you'll find a much better result!

    Quick tips:

    • 10-cup rice cooker uses a minimum of 2 cups of rice, 5-cup rice cooker uses a minimum of 1 cup of rice.

    • Rinse the rice and drain completely. Then add the needed amount of cooking water. Use 1 cup of water for each cup of rice. Therefore, 2 cups of rice need 2 cups of water. In case of brown rice, ratio would increase to 2.5 cups of water, depending on varieties of rice.

    • The most important point: After cooking time has completed, the rice cooker will automatically switch to "Keep Warm" mode. You should turn off the power or main switch and then leave the lid closed for 10-15 minutes before serving.


    Additional cooker guidelines 

    Cooker Modes:

    For Rice: The rice cooker has a Cook mode and Keep Warm mode. For cooking rice, it will turn to Keep Warm mode automatically after the cooking is completed. It takes about 13 minutes to cook. For the best result, leave the lid closed and the cooker switched off for an additional 10-15 minutes after cooking is completed - this helps greatly to avoid sticking.

    For Soups & Porridges: Use the cooker in Soup and Porridge mode. As cooking styles for soup and porridge is different for everyone, you do need to check manually to get the best personal result depending on the recipe used.

    Water Cups: You will find that newer models of rice cookers no longer have water cups. These are the containers located at the back of rice cookers that collect water produced during the cooking process. The tubes for the water cups always become dirty and are extremely difficult to clean. The best design is to have a water collection area around the rice cooker. The user can wipe away the water with a dry cloth.

    Heating Base: The heating base can be dirty. We do not recommend any use of detergents for cleaning. Please make sure that the base of the rice cooker insert is clean before placing it in the rice cooker.

    Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is a very strong material that can endure many types of erosion; however, it can be eroded. For example, if you place a stainless wok on the beach, you may find it oxidised a week later. Therefore, you will need to clean the cookware thoroughly every time after use. Do not let salt, vinegar, or lemon juice sit on a stainless steel surface for more than 48 hours. 

    Use and Clean: Please use and clean the cookware according to the enclosed instructions. Because of the high heat used with stainless steel, your rice cooker will have a plastic-like smell during the first three uses. This is normal and there are no negative effects on your health or safety because of this smell. It will go away with continued use.

    You can expect your cookware to be reliable. To ensure top performance each time you use your cookware, regular cleaning is necessary. Improper care may affect how your rice cooker or pressure cooker functions.

    Many chefs prefer stainless steel pans for their major cooking jobs. Unlike aluminum, stainless steel does not react with acidic foods. Although stainless steel is a tough metal, care is required when cleaning a pan made from this material. Here is a how to guide for cleaning your stainless steel cookware.

    To get the best out of your stainless steel cookware, follow these simple steps to get the maximum satisfaction return!

    • Use a soft cloth or sponge
      When cleaning your stainless steel cookware, a soft cloth or sponge is the best tool for the job. Wet the cookware first. Then use a mild detergent and a soft cloth to wipe away any food debris and grease.
    • Use lemon juice to remove calcium
      Wet the stainless steel with lemon juice, and then clean as usual with a mild detergent and soft cloth.
    • Use hot water to remove stubborn stains
      Fill your cookware with tap water. Use enough to cover the stains. Then allow the water to boil. The debris should come off by itself without any hard scrubbing. While the water is still boiling, use a spatula or tongs with a cloth to gently rub the stained areas. You may also empty the hot water and then wipe the inside clean. Use caution when using this method to clean your cookware. Avoid scalding your hands.
    • Use a specialty cleanser for hard stains
      Choose a cleanser specifically designed for stainless steel, such as Buffalo's cleansing powder. Make a paste with the cleanser and some water, and rub it on the surface of the pan. Start in the center of the pan and work your way out in a circular motion, following the natural rings of the stainless steel.
    • Rainbow Patterns
      Rainbow marks happen for a variety of reasons. It may be because of minerals in the water or starch from cooking potatoes or canned beans. The best remedy is our powdered cleanser. It is gentle enough not to scratch, but tough enough to remove even burnt debris. Just dampen the pan, sprinkle the powder, rub around with a sponge, and give it a couple minutes to work. Scrub, wash, and rinse to remove the residue. Stainless steel is safe to use even with rainbow marks. It is mainly a mineral deposit plus some oil. Even if you leave it, it would not affect your cookware or your food.
    • Never use harsh chemicals
      Ammonia, bleach and other harsh chemicals may damage or discolour your stainless steel pan. 
      With proper care and cleaning techniques, your stainless steel cookware can provide years of quality service in your kitchen.
    • Vinegar
      In short, vinegar is an acid. Acid types and strengths vary. The acid in the vinegar will remove stains and bacteria. However, prolonged contact with stainless steel will cause corrosion, depending on the strength.
